Ain’t It Cool News Review : The Divine Tragedies

THE DIVINE TRAGEDIES is a confident little bastard of a film, trusting that the characters and the story is going to be compelling enough for you to stick around long enough to figure out the ups and downs of the weird little universe the film lives in. And it turns out, the film delivers on that confident beginning and never really lets up until the ultra-powerful final beats.

Taking a page or two from NATURAL BORN KILLERS and maybe some nuances from a David Lynch film or two, THE DIVINE TRAGEDIES is still one of the most original and entertaining films I’ve seen in ages. The opening scene focuses on two brothers Charles (Graham Denman) and Thomas (Jon Kondelik), two evil bastards who are playing a game with a crackhead they used to go to school with as kids. As the scene progresses, the conversation bips and bops, riffs and raps a lot like a Tarantino joint. There are sidebars and diatribes, discourses and distracting conversations before the actual violence they’ve been talking about occurs. The way it plays out, surely we won’t be following around these two devious sons of bitches for the whole movie. Surely, these two guys are the ones who get wiped out in the first scene in order to establish the real heroes. That’s what writer/director Jose Prendes seems to want us to think. But turns out we have it all wrong and this is a film about these two evil fucks. Beginning in such an off kilter manner gives us a hint that all bets are off and by following these two nicely dressed monsters, we’re headed into dangerous territory.

But while Thomas and Charles talk a big game, they seem to have a softer side. They take care of their ailing and bed-ridden mother (Barbara Crampton) and are obviously living a very privileged life. All of this makes their plans to murder someone for the first time all the more shocking and deliciously evil. As it walks through the two brothers’ first kill, THE DIVINE TRAGEDIES turns out to be an unpredictable little number, never really going the expected route and proving to be full of surprises all the way until the end.

A lot of the power of this film comes from the bizarre portrayal of Thomas and Charles by Denman and Kondelik. Kondelik seems to be the eviler of the two, more verbal and confident, definitely the bully of the two. But it’s the Crispin Glover-esque performance by Graham Denman that really stands out here. Denman goes through such a transformation in this film. Both brothers do, really. And to see these two brothers metamorphose after blood is spilled is brilliant to see from these two up and coming actors.

DAWN OF THE DEAD’s Ken Foree appears as a cop with psychic powers and with Crampton, really adds some solid acting foundation for these two newcomer actors to play off of. But it is the performances by Denman and Kondelik and the words and twists from writer/director Jose Prendes that make this film one to remember. Though there is copious amounts of blood and violence, the real horror comes from how fucked up these two brothers really are and how it plays out with everyone unlucky enough to cross their path. The heavy reliance on dialog is definitely going to make or break this film depending on whether you like Tarantino-ian wordplay or Mamet-esque bullet-speak. But for my tastes, THE DIVINE TRAGEDIES is a dangerous and perfect little nightmare that needs to be seen.

Horror Icon Bill Oberst Jr. Runs An Evil Carnival Booth For ABCs of Death

Oberst stars in “M is for Masochist”, an ABCs of Death 2 submission, directed by The Kondelik Brothers–twin directors with a Dual Vision.

“A game so cruel, it’s cool!” shouts the carnival barker, Sade, in the up-and-coming twin Directors, James and Jon Kondelik, ABCs of Death 2 submission entitled, M is for Masochist, which promises to shock and entertain audiences of the genre.

Oberst is synonymous with horror as seen in over a hundred credits he has to his name including: Resolution, Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, Children of Sorrow, and viral sensation Take this Lollipop. With Masochist, Oberst brings on the intensity and creepiness with an angel of vengeance twist.

The Kondelik Brothers are twin director newcomers, but not foreign to the horror genre after the feature, A House is not A Home, they wrote won the award for Best Horror Feature at the Burbank Film Festival. More on that here.

Upon wrapping their directorial debut, Jon grew restless as James edited the film. So they called some crew members from their previous film back for a new project to “decompress like a cooling off workout” by writing and directing a short film for the ABCs of Death 2 contest.

The ABCs of Death is a horror anthology with a short for each appointed letter of the alphabet. The first installment was such a success with knockout segments by amazing directors from all over the world that the audience asked for bloody seconds. The second installment has yet another mouth-watering roster that any fanboy could have dreamed for including Julian Barratt of The Mighty Boosh; Todd Rohal (THE CATECHISM CATALYSM); Canada’s king of lo-fi, Steven Kostanski (MANBORG); Cuba’s Alejandro Brugués (JUAN OF THE DEAD); acclaimed UK commercial director Jim Hosking; Japanese monster-maker Hajime Ohata (HENGE); and Canadian short film wizard Chris Nash (SKINFECTIONS).

Previously confirmed filmmakers include Goya Award winner Álex de la Iglesia (THE LAST CIRCUS, DAY OF THE BEAST), ROOM 237 mastermind Rodney Ascher, Academy Award-nominated animator Bill Plympton; Filipino icon – and Director’s Fortnight inductee – Erik Matti (ON THE JOB, MAGIC TEMPLE), Lithuania’s Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper (VANISHING WAVES), Japan’s arthouse provocateur Sion Sono (COLD FISH, SUICIDE CLUB), SPLICE and CUBE’s Vincenzo Natali, indie horror icon Larry Fessenden (THE LAST WINTER, HABIT), THE COLLECTION’s Marcus Dunstan, France’s Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (INSIDE, LIVID), E.L. Katz (director of the SXSW breakout hit CHEAP THRILLS), twin auteurs Jen and Sylvia Soska (AMERICAN MARY, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK), Israel’s Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (RABIES, BIG BAD WOLVES), A LONELY PLACE TO DIE’s Julian Gilbey, Brazil’s most controversial filmmaker Dennison Ramalho (NINJAS and LOVE FOR MOTHER ONLY), the founder of Nigerian “Nollywood” cinema Lancelot Imasuen, THE LEGEND OF BEAVER DAM and the upcoming STAGEFRIGHT’s Jerome Sable, and animator Robert Morgan – creator of the BAFTA Award nominated short BOBBY YEAH.

Jonathan Nation as the Masochist

The Kondelik Brothers hope to join this amazing roster of directors with their short film, M is for Masochist. Voting ends on November 14th. You may vote here.  For more information about The Kondelik Brothers you may visit www.thekondelikbrothers.com.

Geek Gossip: Robot & Frank, Secret Village, Ditch, Broken, A House Is Not A Home, Pain is Beautiful, Miss Poppins

Source: Coventry Telegraph Posted by: David Bentley on February 5, 2013

Here’s a write-up for two films the Kondelik Brothers have worked on. One is the haunted house horror film, A House is Not a Home written by The Kondelik Brothers. The other is the slasher, DITCH edited by James Kondelik. Thanks to Coventry Telegraph and the Geek Files for this!

It’s the reign of the robots on screen, even though Spielberg’s Robopocalypse went back to the drawing board for a total rethink.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim will show pilot-operated machines tackling an invasion of giant monsters, another Transformers is on the way and the next X-Men film is an exciting time-travel tale that will see mutant-hunting Sentinels targeting the team.

Continuing the trend but on a much smaller scale is Robot & Frank, which will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on March 8, 2013.

An official UK poster was recently unveiled for the movie, which is directed by Jake Schreier and stars Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden and Liv Tyler, with Robot voiced by Peter Sarsgaard.

Robot & Frank is a buddy caper. Set in the near future, ageing curmudgeon and retired jewel thief Frank (Frank Langella) lives a solitary life until his son (James Marsden) installs a caretaker robot, against he and his daughter’s (Liv Tyler) wishes.

The robot upends Frank’s lonely life – filled only with books and a visit to his favourite librarian (Susan Sarandon) – with a strict regimen of exercise, diet and gardening. Stubborn at first, Frank soon realises Robot has the ability to pull off the most calculated of heists. An unlikely friendship, and crime duo, is born

Robot & Frank received its World Premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival where it was awarded the Alfred P. Sloan prize, an award given to a feature film that focuses on science or technology as a theme. It also screened at this year’s London Film Festival.

Jonathan Bennett (Memorial Day), Ali Faulkner (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1), Stelio Savante (My Super Ex Girlfriend) and Richard Riehle (Halloween II) star in the upcoming psychological horrorThe Secret Village, directed by Swamy Kandan,

ditch-movie-poster.jpgWritten by Kandan and Jason B. Whittier, The Secret Village follows Greg (Bennett), an unsuccessful screenwriter and Rachel (Faulkner), a journalist, as they research an outbreak of mass hysteria and ergot poisoning in a small village.

They rent a house together and start to uncover a secret that has affected this village for years. But the cult activity has been kept a secret by the locals (Savante and Riehle) and when Greg disappears, Rachel is left alone to unravel the mystery and save their lives.

Horror feature Ditch is in post-production and is expected to be released later in 2013.

According to the official synopsis: Jenny Bilson (Katy Foley), a high school senior, is the perfect student, a wonderful daughter to a veteran police detective and an all American Dream. But the one mistake she is unaware of making is about to haunt her in a very violent way as her past returns for revenge

Ditch is directed by Joe Hendrick, written by Daniel P Couglin and stars Bill Oberst Jr, Katy Foley, Zach Silverman, Lynn Lowry and Morgan Benoit.

A UK release date of March 8 has been confirmed for BIFA-winning filmBroken, starring starring Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy and Rory Kinnear.

From acclaimed director Rufus Norris, Broken is described as “a powerful, captivating and heartbreaking exploration of love in all its many forms: idealised, unrequited, and, ultimately, unconditional.

“With some light comic touches and a brilliant central performance from newcomer Eloise Laurence, this coming of age story deals with the tumultuousness of growing up in a world where the happy certainties of childhood give way to a fear-filled doubt, and where a complex, broken world fills the future.”

Veteran actor Bill Cobbs (A Night at the Musuem, pictured right) also stars in this horror feature, along with Eddie Steeples (My Name is Earl, below right). Richard Grieco (21 Jump Street) plays Rafkin.

Serial killer thriller Pain is Beautiful has this week had its premiere in Los Angeles.

eddie-steeples-a-house-is-not-a-home.jpgWilliam Hendricks is a heavily scarred loner who was born with a rare disorder called CIPA, Congenital Insensitivity to Pain. He feels no pain and no pleasure. After years of wondering what pain feels like, he decides to go to extreme measures to feel anything. He recruits victims to help him understand what others take for granted in what is described as “an unconventional film that will flip the serial killer genre on its head.”

Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams) stars, along with Ivet Corvea (Nude Nuns with Big Guns) and genre favourite Elissa Dowling. All of these cast members will tangle with director and co-writer Chris Staviski, who also plays the killer (pictured below).

The cast also features Tim Sullivan, Jessica Sonneborn, Mike Pfaff, Lynn Ayala, Brian McCulley and DeeDee Bigelow.

DeeDee, well known in the indie horror and sci-fi world, also stars in Stephen Niver’s new short film Miss Poppins, alongside Brett Wagner, P David Miller, Jesse Nelson, Roger Torres, Ron Kari, JR Gennuso and Shadow the dog.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Miss Poppins is an avid yoga class participant…at least that is what her boyfriend thinks. But it isn’t yoga that Miss Poppins is off to do. Instead, there is an international incident that she must handle, alone. Let’s just hope she is tough enough to save the day.’
